This painting holds a unique place in my history as an artist. It is one of the earliest paintings I ever made, created in oil on a hand-cut piece of wood long before the style and body of work I’m known for today had fully taken shape.
I rarely work in oil, and the irregular silhouette of the wood makes the piece as much an object as a painting. Looking at it now, I can see early traces of things that would continue to surface in my work years later: the figure, exaggerated color, loose mark-making, and a willingness to let the material remain raw.
I’ve kept this piece for years and never really thought of it in the same way as work created for exhibition or sale. Because of its place in my personal archive, it is being offered as a singular early work rather than priced according to the scale of my current paintings.
